Raiders of the Lost Macintosh May 2008

Best free downloads, shareware and demos

by Dr. Eric Flescher

Here are some of the best free, shareware and demo applications out there that I have found. Try some of these out. You will be amazed what some Mac authors have created and designed.

CandyBar 3.1.2
http://www.macworld.com/article/132598/2008/03/candybar3.html?lsrc=mwgems
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16010
License: Free to try; $10.00 to buy
Minimum Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4
Information: CandyBar lets you change images to customize OS X's icons. Customize Leopard's Dock, apply custom icons to files and applications. Personalize your Macs appearance.

Quay 1.1b3
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/04/quay-1-1b3-offers-nice-changes/
http://www.macworld.com/article/132545/2008/03/quay.html?lsrc=mwgems
License: Free to try; $10.00 to buy
Minimum Requirements: Mac OS X 10.4
Information: Quay-enhanced Dock menus fixes aliases to folders that Leopard's stock Dock menus do not cover. Sort by label, file size, or application; invert the sort order; select how to display icons; view invisible items; navigate the contents of packages; view the number of items in each folder; and display the modification or creation date, label, or file size next to each item. And there are a number of other minor-but-useful features I enjoy.

Breakaway 1.5

Shareware
Designed to prevent the accidental unplugging your music while you are playing. Automatically resumes iTunes playback when using your headphones again. You can link your laptop's Mute key to iTunes so that muting audio pauses iTunes. Un-muting resumes playback. Other useful features include triggering AppleScripts when headphones are unplugged, headphones are plugged in, audio is muted, or audio is un-muted.
